After 11 long years since the separation of Andhra Pradesh, the Central government has given the first green signal for the construction of the Amaravati-Hyderabad Greenfield Expressway. This new expressway will be 220 kilometres long and aims to improve road connectivity between Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, and Hyderabad. The decision was recently shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which has been looking into pending issues since the state was divided.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has now been asked to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for this expressway. The new six-lane road will be developed from the ground up, without using any existing highways. This means faster travel, better development opportunities, and the possible rise of new towns and business areas along the route. Officials have said that although the project has been approved in principle, land acquisition and final planning are still to be completed.
Strengthening bonds between the Telugu states
In a meeting held on February 3, 2025, the Telangana government, led by Congress, stressed the importance of following the promises made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 (APRA). The Act had clearly stated that better road and rail links must be built between Amaravati and Hyderabad, and other major places in Telangana. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways supported this idea and issued fresh instructions on April 9, 2025, to push the project forward.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has also suggested that the expressway should be extended up to Machilipatnam, a port city. His idea is to speed up the transport of goods by road and reduce logistics time. To support this, he proposed building a dry port near the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu agreed with this vision and said that better roads between Hyderabad and Amaravati would increase trust and friendship between the two Telugu-speaking states.
After this mutual understanding, both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana officials met Union ministry leaders many times. They discussed the expressway's benefits and urged the central government to approve it quickly. This teamwork shows that both states are serious about working together to improve the region's economy and cultural ties.
The Amaravati-Hyderabad Greenfield Expressway is not just a road-it is a symbol of new hope and progress for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Once finished, it will not only reduce travel time but also boost business and social development along the route. The project is expected to bring the two Telugu states closer and help them grow together in the coming years.
