Ladakh's New Development: World's Highest Fighter Airfield in Nyoma
India has an ambitious plan to construct the world's highest fighter airfield in Nyoma, a strategically significant location near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. This airfield, perched at an altitude of 13,300 feet, is designed to host fighter jets like Rafale, Sukhoi-30MKI, and Tejas, bolstering India's defense capabilities in the region.
The project carries an estimated cost of approximately Rs 1,000 crore and is slated for completion by 2025. This high-altitude airfield will feature a 3.5 km runway and be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities including hangars, fuel storage facilities, and an air traffic control tower.
Enhancing India's operational capabilities and deterrence, the Nyoma airfield will allow for the swift deployment and rotation of fighter jets. Moreover, it will significantly improve India's connectivity and logistics support for the forward areas situated along the LAC.
Historical Context: The Nyoma airfield has a history dating back to 1962 when it was first established by the Indian Air Force (IAF) as an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) primarily for transport aircraft. After a hiatus of 43 years, it was reactivated in 2009 and became operational for landing AN-32 and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
