Air India Launches Premium Economy on Bengaluru, Delhi, Chandigarh Routes: How it Differs from Business Class

Air India is launching a new Premium Economy class on some of its domestic routes starting in July. This new class will offer extra legroom and upgraded amenities. At first, it will be available on the Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Chandigarh routes. Air India plans to eventually offer Premium Economy on its entire narrow-body fleet.

Air India Launches Premium Economy

Currently, Vistara is the only Indian airline that offers Premium Economy on its domestic routes. This move by Air India aims to provide more choices for travelers looking for comfort and convenience.

New Aircraft and Seating Configuration

Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has refitted two new A320neo aircraft to include three types of seating. These planes will have eight seats in Business Class, 24 seats with extra legroom in Premium Economy, and 132 seats in Economy Class. This is the first time Air India has introduced Premium Economy cabins on its narrow-body aircraft.

Campbell Wilson, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, said, "The introduction of a three-class cabin to Air India's narrow-body fleet and commencement of interior refits are important steps in the journey of enhancing the flying experience." He also mentioned that this upgrade will complement the experience available on Air India's wide-body planes, such as the A350 fleet and new B777s.

Plans for Expansion

Air India plans to introduce the three-class configuration to its entire narrow-body fleet over the next year. The current aircraft are being progressively refitted, and new aircraft joining the fleet will already have the new Air India experience.

Benefits of Premium Economy

Premium Economy typically offers several benefits over standard Economy class. These benefits include:

- More Legroom: Extra space to stretch out.

- Wider Seats: More comfort for longer flights.

- Enhanced Meal Service: Better quality and variety of food.

- Additional Baggage Allowance: More luggage without extra fees.

- Priority Boarding: Less waiting time at the airport.

These features aim to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

Differences Between Premium Economy and Business Class

While Premium Economy offers many advantages over Economy, it is different from Business Class in several ways:

- Seat Comfort: Business Class seats are often larger and can recline into a flat bed, while Premium Economy seats are wider than Economy but do not fully recline.

- Privacy: Business Class offers more privacy, sometimes with individual pods.

- Service: Business Class typically includes a higher level of service, with gourmet meals and a greater selection of beverages.

- Amenities: Business Class passengers may receive amenity kits, premium headphones, and access to airport lounges.

- Price: Business Class is generally more expensive than Premium Economy.

Both classes offer an enhanced experience compared to Economy, with Business Class providing the most luxurious option.

Air India's introduction of Premium Economy class on select domestic routes is a significant step towards enhancing the flying experience for its passengers. With extra legroom, upgraded amenities, and priority services, travelers now have more choices to suit their comfort and budget needs. The gradual rollout to the entire narrow-body fleet shows Air India's commitment to providing a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for all its passengers.
