Ahmedabad will soon have a new six-lane bridge across the Sabarmati River as part of the second phase of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development. This important project will be completed by April 2027 and aims to connect Acher on the west bank of the river with Camp Sadar Bazar on the east. The bridge is expected to improve traffic flow, water management, and the beauty of the city.

Big Step for Connectivity and Riverfront Development
The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) is leading this major project. The civil construction work has been given to M/s Rajkamal Builders Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. for a cost of ₹239.92 crore. Basic work like soil testing, surveys, and setting up the site has already been completed.
The bridge will be 1,048.08 meters long. It will have a unique design with a 126-meter-long iron arch in the middle and two 42-meter suspended arch sections. The remaining parts of the bridge will be built with pre-stressed box-type girders. There will also be a 3-meter-wide walkway for people to enjoy views of the Sabarmati River. This walkway will be under the main road and covered with tensile roofing.
Rubber Barrage to Manage Water Flow
An important part of the project is a new air-filled rubber barrage, which is the first of its kind in Gujarat. This barrage will help manage water levels in the Sabarmati River and support water supply during maintenance of the Narmada Main Canal. The contract for this ₹53.78 crore barrage has been given to M/s YOOIL Envirotech Private Limited from South Korea. The company will handle the manufacturing, installation, and upkeep of the barrage and its automatic systems.
The barrage will also include lock gates, decorative lighting, and space for water transport. These additions will improve the river's look and make the area more attractive for both locals and visitors.
Better Traffic and Cleaner Water Supply
This new bridge will connect key areas in western Ahmedabad like Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, and Hansol to eastern parts near the airport. This will help reduce traffic and save time for daily travelers. The barrage will help maintain steady water levels up to Gandhinagar and ensure a continuous water supply to Ahmedabad.
The Government of Gujarat's Road and Building Department is reviewing the bridge's structural design. The civil design is already approved, and work on the riverbed, including building the R.C.C. diaphragm wall and filling soil, is ongoing.
This project shows the strong efforts of SRFDCL and the Gujarat government in making Ahmedabad more connected, modern, and better prepared for the future.
