The redevelopment of Kalupur Railway Station in Ahmedabad is taking a big step forward. Plans to demolish the old Kalupur and Sarangpur bridges will begin in January as part of an ambitious project to upgrade the city's infrastructure. Initially planned as four-lane bridges, a recent survey has recommended expanding them to six lanes to handle future traffic needs. This project is crucial as millions of people use these bridges every day.
The redevelopment is being carried out by the Railways and the Municipal Corporation at an estimated cost of ₹440 crores. The shift from four lanes to six lanes reflects the authorities' vision for long-term traffic management and urban development. However, the expansion comes with challenges, including the demolition of several properties near the bridges.
Property Demolitions and Compensation
Around 200 properties near the Sarangpur Bridge and more than 250 near the Kalupur Bridge are expected to be affected. In total, over 450 houses and shops will need to be removed to make space for the expanded bridges. Local MLA Dinesh Kushwaha has stressed the importance of providing fair compensation to the affected property owners. He has urged authorities to offer market-rate compensation instead of government rates to ensure fairness in the redevelopment process.
Addressing Traffic Issues
The expansion of these bridges is essential to manage the growing number of commuters. Millions rely on the Kalupur and Sarangpur bridges daily, making their redevelopment urgent. A letter supporting the six-lane expansion has already been sent to the Municipal Commissioner, showing progress in the project's planning.
Delays and Criticism
Corporator Iqbal Shaikh expressed concerns over delays in the project. He pointed out that more than nine months have passed since the station redevelopment began, yet the bridge expansion survey was conducted only recently. This delay, he said, could further postpone the project, adding to the frustration of the public and stakeholders.
