After months of delays and growing public frustration, Bengaluru's Namma Metro Phase 3 is finally moving forward. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that it will soon invite bids for the 28.4 km JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (Hebbal) corridor, which is an important step in

expanding the city's metro network.
Tendering Process Faced Setbacks
The project was approved by the Central Government almost a year ago, but the tendering process faced repeated setbacks, frustrating citizens and transport experts. The delay was mainly due to the complicated design, especially for the double-decker viaduct, a unique structure combining both a flyover and a metro line. With the design phase now complete, the project will move into construction, which will be completed in separate packages covering elevated tracks, stations, and depots.
New Corridor Connections
This new corridor will connect JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura and pass through key areas like Kamakya, Nagarabhavi Circle, and Papareddypalya. It will have 30 stations, including seven interchange points linking to other metro routes, improving overall connectivity. The project includes a 37.12 km double-decker system, which combines the JP Nagar-Kempapura line and another elevated stretch between Hosahalli and Kadabagere. The total cost of this system is ₹9,700 crore, approved by the Karnataka Cabinet in September 2025.
Funding for Phase 3
The funding for Phase 3 will come from multiple sources: 50% from the State Government, 10% from the Central Government, and 40% from loans. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing ₹7,577 crore for the project, including the purchase of trains. The overall cost for Phase 3, which includes the Blue Line (Phase 3A), is ₹15,611 crore. The project, originally scheduled for completion by 2029, is now expected to finish by 2031.
Once Phase 3 is operational, Bengaluru's metro network will be the second-largest in India, serving millions of passengers daily and helping reduce traffic congestion in key areas.
