The Council was permitted to negotiate a proposal to digitize the visa application procedure, and the ambassadors of the European Union member states agreed to it. The idea calls for the introduction of online visa applications and the substitution of digital visas for the current sticker-style visas.

It intends to improve security in the Schengen region and simplify the visa application procedure for thousands of people traveling to Europe. The environment of the EU's visa policy has considerably changed as a result of recent migration & security measures. The Covid-19 outbreak also caused visa operations to lag and increased the necessity for digital processes.
In this regard, on April 27 of last year, the Commission proposed a legislative proposal with the goal of digitising the visa application process. After almost a year, the EU's members agreed on this proposal. To come to an agreement on the final text, the Council presidency will open negotiations with European Parliament.
How it will work?
The new guidelines that are being considered will build a platform for visa applications. All Schengen visa applications will be submitted via this platform, a unified website, which will then route them to the appropriate national visa systems.
Visa applicants will indeed be able to provide all necessary information, upload electronic versions of their trip and supporting papers, plus pay their visa fees on this portal. Also, they will be informed of any decisions made on their visa. Also, according to the regulations, applicants who are applying for the first time, travellers whose biometric information is no longer valid, and those who have new travel documents must physically present before the consulate.

The platform will easily determine, based on the length of stay, which Schengen country will review the application when a person plans to travel to multiple Schengen nations. However, the visa applicant will additionally be given the option to specify which member state should handle the application depending on the intended purpose of travel.
According to the new rules, visas will be distributed digitally as a 2D barcodes that is cryptographically certified or signed. By doing this, the security risks posed by stolen and fake visa stickers will be reduced.
