Maharashtra is set for a major change in tourism and transport with the approval of 45 new ropeways. This project, led by the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), will make travel to some of the most famous tourist destinations in the state easier and more eco-friendly.
Places like Raigad Fort, Matheran, and Elephanta Caves will soon have better connectivity, making them more accessible to visitors. This initiative not only aims to reduce traffic congestion but also supports sustainable tourism. With a focus on green travel, Maharashtra is taking a big step toward modernizing its tourism infrastructure while protecting its natural beauty.
Better Connectivity to Historical and Natural Sites
The new ropeway project will improve access to Maharashtra's most important historical and natural attractions. One of the key sites, Raigad Fort, holds great historical significance as the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's empire. With an upgraded ropeway, visitors will find it much easier to reach this iconic fort.
Matheran, known as one of the smallest hill stations in India, is famous for its scenic views and pollution-free environment. The introduction of a ropeway will provide an eco-friendly way for tourists to experience its breathtaking landscapes.
Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is currently accessible only by ferry. With the new ropeway, visitors will enjoy a smoother and more convenient journey to this cultural landmark.

NHLML Takes Charge of the Project
Initially, different state agencies were expected to handle the ropeway projects. However, the latest decision gives full responsibility to NHLML, ensuring a more organized and efficient approach to development. State agencies will provide the necessary land for a 30-year lease, making it a joint effort to enhance tourism in Maharashtra.
The scope of the project extends beyond Raigad, Matheran, and Elephanta Caves. Other significant locations like Kunkeshwar Temple, Sinhagad Fort near Pune, and Mahabaleshwar will also benefit from this initiative. The ropeways will offer visitors a scenic and eco-friendly way to travel, improving both accessibility and the overall tourist experience.
