Dharchula, The Beauty of Peaks

Dharchula, located in Uttarakhand, is a beautiful town on the Indo-Nepal border. It is surrounded by snow-clad mountains, which makes this place picturesque and a must-visit destination in the state. Tourists come here from far and wide to relax and enjoy amidst the beauty. It provides a great escape from the pollution and stress of the city.

Although it is a small town, there are many tourist attractions in Dharchula that visitors can explore. Some of the places to visit in Dharchula include; the Om Parvat, Kali River, Chirkila Dam and Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary.

Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary

One of the major tourist attractions in Dharchula is the Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary, which is set up with the initiative to protect and conserve Musk Deers. There are many more wild animals that are housed in this sanctuary namely leopard, barking deer, brown bear, snow leopards, Himalayan black bear, and more. It also has many species of birds. The place attracts wildlife enthusiasts, bird lovers and nature lovers.

Chirkila Dam

The Chirkila Dam in Dharchula is a hydro-power plant constructed over the Kali River. This place is an ideal picnic spot and also provides a stunning view of the river. Photographers come here to capture the beauty of this region as it provides a panoramic view of the place.

Kali River

The Kali River is another must-visit place in Dharchula. It derives its name from a Kali Temple which is situated from the river's originating point at Kalapaani in the Himalayas. There are many water activities that are held here, of which the white water rafting is the most prominent. Tourists come here to either participate in these water sports or to sit back and relax in the beautiful environment of the river.

Om Parvat

Another major tourist attraction in Dharchula is the Om Parvat, which derives its name from the pattern of snow settling atop this peak. It is known by various other names like; Little Kailash, Adi Kailash, Baba Kailash and Jonglingkong Peak. It is believed to be a religious spot for the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains as the symbol 'Om' or 'Aum' holds great significance in these religions.

How to Reach Dharchula

By Air: Pantnagar Airport is the nearest airbase located at a distance of 335 km from Dharchula. There are daily flights which connect this airport with the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. All major towns of India are connected to this international airport by flights.

By Train: The closest railway station is located in the Tanakpur town at a distance of 239 km from Dharchula. This station is connected to the major cities of India by frequent trains.

By Road: Dharchula is connected to Pithoragarh town by state owned buses. Buses also run from the Interstate Bus Terminal or Anad Vihar, Delhi to Champawat, Almora and Tanakpur. Tourists can hire taxis from these towns to reach Dharchula.
