Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a groundbreaking impact on Varanasi by inaugurating 23 completed projects and initiating the groundwork for 13 new initiatives, collectively valued at Rs 3,344 crore. These projects, an integral part of the Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway Construction Package I, promise to redefine connectivity and infrastructure in the region.

Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway: Revolutionizing Travel
At the heart of this massive initiative is the Varanasi-Kolkata greenfield expressway, poised to cut the travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata by half. Currently covering approximately 690 km and taking 12 to 14 hours, this transformative expressway aims to reduce the commute to just 6 to 7 hours, significantly enhancing efficiency and connectivity.
Prime Minister Modi's foundation stone-laying for Package I includes key components like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited's manufacturing unit for Vande Bharat trains, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campus, a medical college, and the atomic energy department's common bio-medical waste disposal facility.
Infrastructure Facelift for Varanasi
The 13 projects receiving the Prime Minister's attention during his visit will bring about a substantial improvement in Varanasi's infrastructure. Covering diverse sectors such as medical education, fashion technology, and bio-medical waste disposal, these projects mark a strategic move towards comprehensive development.
Among the noteworthy additions is Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited's unit, which contributes to the manufacturing of components for Vande Bharat trains. This aligns with the government's vision of enhancing indigenous capabilities in the railway sector. The establishment of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campus and a new medical college will further boost education and healthcare services in the region.
Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway: A Journey Redefined
The Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway, with an anticipated completion date in 2026, will traverse Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Originating in Varanasi, it will cut through Bihar, enter Jharkhand, and culminate in Bengal. The expressway is strategically designed to streamline travel, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity across these states.
Key features include a proposed five-kilometer tunnel in the Kaimur hills, facilitating a crossing of the Sone River in Tilauthu, Sasaram, and entry into Aurangabad via the Grand Trunk road. Estimated at Rs 35,000 crore, the project will traverse through Jharkhand, entering from Hunterganj in Chatra and exiting West Bengal's Purulia district via Hazaribag and Ramgarh.
Bharatmala Pariyojna (BMP) and the Path Forward
This greenfield expressway is a crucial component of the Bharatmala Pariyojna (BMP) program. Set to run parallel to National Highway NH-19 (old NH-12), it aims to link Varanasi Ring Road at Km 00.000 (near Barhuli village) with NH-16 at Km 610.417 near Uluberia, Howrah District, West Bengal. This project signifies a monumental leap towards achieving seamless connectivity and fostering economic development across the states it encompasses.
The Prime Minister's initiatives mark a monumental step towards transforming Varanasi's landscape. The projects not only enhance connectivity but also lay the groundwork for a brighter, more connected future.
