Kolkata Metro Railway has begun preliminary work on a proposed new metro corridor that will connect Kolkata Station at Chitpur with Karunamoyee in Salt Lake. The project is currently in the feasibility study stage and marks the first completely new metro route proposal in Kolkata in nearly 15 years.

Kolkata Metro Corridor
The proposed corridor will be around 8.8 kilometres long and is planned to provide a direct connection between Kolkata Station and Karunamoyee. Along the way, it will pass through important areas such as Khudiram Bose Road, the Bagjola Canal corridor, and the 6 Island Circle area.
Officials have not yet finalized the route design. They are still evaluating whether the entire corridor should be elevated or whether it should include a mix of underground and elevated sections. This decision will be made after detailed technical studies and surveys are completed.
Kolkata Metro's Feasibility Study
Metro authorities have already commissioned a feasibility study and begun field surveys to assess the project's viability. Initial funds have also been released to support technical investigations and planning work. These studies will help determine the best alignment, construction method, and overall feasibility of the proposed metro line. Although the new corridor will end at Karunamoyee, it is expected to function as a separate and independent metro line rather than being an extension of the existing East-West Metro.
The proposal comes at a time when metro rail expansion projects in Kolkata are gaining momentum. It follows recent efforts to revive the long-pending Baranagar-Barrackpore Metro project, reflecting a renewed focus on improving the city's urban transport network.
If approved and completed, the new corridor could improve connectivity between central Kolkata and Salt Lake, making travel faster and more convenient for daily commuters.
