In a unique move, the Narendra Modi government granted international status to Jamnagar Airport, a sensitive defense facility in Gujarat, for a brief period of 10 days. The decision was made to accommodate guests attending the wedding of Mukesh Ambani's son, Anant Ambani. The international designation, active from February 25 to March 5, allowed private aircraft carrying guests to land closer to the venue.
Given the sensitive nature of the defense airport located near the Pakistan border, the Union government's Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Home Affairs collaborated to establish a Custom, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) facility at the airport. This temporary international status enabled the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to expand the passenger building size, accommodating nearly 360 passengers during peak hours, double the previous capacity.
For the Ambani wedding festivities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) went beyond its usual protocols, permitting access to its sensitive "technical" area. This move aimed to facilitate the smooth arrival of guests via private aircraft. The AAI constructed a passenger terminal building at Jamnagar airport, a defense facility where commercial flights are already allowed.
The preparations for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's pre-wedding functions have led to an unprecedented increase in flight movements at Jamnagar airport. The airport witnessed its highest-ever number of flight movements in history, with 70 flights, including 14 international ones, landing on a single day. This surge in traffic continued with 35 flights, including eight international ones, on the previous day.
