Are you planning to visit Bengal to celebrate Durga Puja or thinking of exploring the hilly areas around Darjeeling? If so, you should be aware of the weather forecast, as a landslide alert has been issued for Darjeeling and other nearby hilly regions, and rain is likely during the festive period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a mix of weather conditions during Durga Puja celebrations, with rain expected in Kolkata and its surrounding regions until October 9, possibly extending to October 13. South Bengal is also expected to experience light to moderate rain during this period, and the city and nearby districts are likely to have cloudy skies throughout the festivities. This weather will add a damp tone to the otherwise joyful celebration of Durga Puja.
From October 6 to October 9, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in several districts of south Bengal. After this period, the showers may continue but in a lighter form. There's a chance of rain and thunderstorms from October 10 to October 13 in some areas. This means the Durga Puja celebrations might be affected by occasional wet weather, and people might need to adjust their outdoor plans accordingly.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast for north Bengal is slightly different. From Sunday to Wednesday, places in north Bengal like Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Dakshin Dinajpur are likely to experience rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. For hilly areas like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, similar conditions are predicted, especially on Monday. Due to the heavy rainfall forecasted in these areas, there's an increased risk of landslides in the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
Weather expert HR Biswas from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) explained that while some areas might see heavier downpours, most districts, including Kolkata, will have on-and-off rain, with occasional heavier spells. However, there is good news for Kolkata, as the intensity of the rain is expected to reduce starting from Saturday. While heavy rains are likely to decrease, light showers might still occur.

The rainy weather is being caused by an upper air circulation forming over southeast Bangladesh, which, along with a trough, could turn into a low-pressure area over the northern Bay of Bengal by Friday. This is expected to bring rain to most parts of south Bengal over the next few days, shaping the weather for the region during the festive period.
As Kolkata and other regions in Bengal prepare for the grand Durga Puja celebrations, people should be ready for unpredictable weather, ranging from cloudy skies to scattered rain. Even though the weather might be a bit wet, the festive spirit in Kolkata and the surrounding areas is likely to remain strong, with everyone coming together to celebrate Durga Puja amidst the raindrops.
So, if you're heading out to enjoy Durga Puja in Kolkata or planning to explore the beauty of Darjeeling's hills, make sure to check the weather forecast and be prepared for rain and potential landslides. Safe travels and happy celebrations!
