A new low-pressure system has developed over the north-west Bay of Bengal, affecting coastal Odisha and West Bengal. This weather pattern is predicted to bring widespread rain to Odisha over the next five to six days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is expected to move west-northwest across north Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of Odisha until July 2 due to this system. However, no heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Puri during the Rath Yatra on Friday. Despite this, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds between 30 kmph and 40 kmph may occur in the district. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in many areas of the state.
Rainfall Impact on Districts
In the next 24 hours, heavy rain is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts. "The trough from the northeast Arabian Sea to cyclonic circulation associated with the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal will trigger heavy rains in the next six days," stated Manorama Mohanty, director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.
Several districts have experienced a rainfall deficit from June 1 to 26. Malkangiri recorded a 50% deficit, Nuapada 42%, Jharsuguda 30%, Bargarh 28%, and both Balangir and Puri at 24% each. The new low-pressure area is expected to reduce these deficits significantly.
The IMD's forecast indicates that while some areas will experience only light showers, others might face more intense downpours. This variability highlights the importance of staying informed about local weather updates during this period.
The movement of this weather system will be closely monitored as it progresses across different regions. Residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared for potential weather changes that could affect daily activities.
