With the onset of Diwali, the festivities in India are never the same as in earlier years. The Festival of Lights in recent years has significantly increased pollution levels, especially in the cities, through excessive use of crackers. These release toxic substances in the atmosphere, causing health issues, air and
noise pollution. As environmental threats are catastrophic to our daily lives, taking sustainable decisions in every step has become essential.
What are Green Crackers?
Green crackers are eco-friendly firecrackers developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and signed a contract with 230 Indian companies for the manufacturing and selling of these products. These crackers are believed to reduce air pollution by 30% as compared to the traditional ones. Green crackers include flower pots, pencils, sparklers, bombs, chakkars, and many more. These are based on Safe Water Releaser (SWAS), Safe Thermite Cracker (STAR), and Safe Minimal Aluminium (SAFAL). The Quick Response Coding system was developed to differentiate itself from traditional crackers.
Green Crackers were developed as a result of a legal dispute over the ban on firecrackers, as it caused severe environmental issues in the past. In the year 2019, the Supreme Court allowed CSIR to produce such products to reduce air and noise pollution & free of mercury, arsenic, and barium, with the approval of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.
How are Green Crackers Beneficial?
• As bursting traditional crackers cause serious environmental problems after the Diwali celebration, including smog, green crackers will cause comparatively less pollution with their safe components.
• Traditional firecrackers cause noise pollution and accidents; however, green crackers have a controlled sound and would reduce such mishaps to an extent.
• Green crackers use the best formulations to release water vapour and suppress dust or minimize harmful components.
Thus, Green Crackers are expected to lower environmental risks and contribute to a healthier environment even after Diwali.
