Southwest Monsoon Gains Strength: Rain Likely Across Andhra Pradesh And Telangana; Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds

The southwest monsoon is gradually strengthening over southern India, with weather activity expected to intensify across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the coming days. Meteorological conditions are showing signs of increased moisture movement, cloud development, and thunderstorm activity, bringing the possibility of scattered rainfall and gusty winds across several regions.

Weather authorities have indicated that pre-monsoon activity is becoming more active even before the official onset of the southwest monsoon over mainland India.

Monsoon System Moves Closer To Andhra Pradesh Coast

According to weather observations, southwest monsoon winds have already advanced into parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and adjoining southern regions, with conditions becoming favourable for further progress toward coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Meteorologists say changing atmospheric patterns and upper-air circulations are helping create cloud formations across southern states, increasing the possibility of rainfall activity during the next few days.

The weather shift comes after several regions experienced persistent heat conditions through the past few weeks.

Rain Forecast For Andhra Pradesh And Telangana

Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana between May 20 and May 22, 2026.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and interior Telangana regions may witness scattered showers, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

Some isolated areas could also witness stronger thunderstorms with wind speeds potentially reaching up to 60 km/h, according to weather assessments.

Hyderabad and nearby districts may experience changing weather conditions through the evening, with sudden cloud build-up and brief rain spells remaining possible.

Heat Conditions May Continue In Some Regions

Despite rain activity, heat conditions are not expected to disappear completely.

Northern parts of Telangana could continue witnessing temperatures in the 40°C-42°C range, while sections of coastal Andhra Pradesh may remain hot during daytime hours before rain activity develops later.

The combination of heat and humidity may also increase discomfort levels in several areas.

Advisory For Residents

Weather experts have advised residents to remain cautious during evening hours because of the possibility of:

  • Lightning activity
  • Sudden strong winds
  • Temporary waterlogging in urban areas
  • Traffic disruptions during heavy showers

Fishermen have also been advised to exercise caution due to strong wind activity over parts of the Bay of Bengal.

What To Expect Next

The increasing cloud activity over southern India indicates that weather systems are becoming more organised ahead of the broader southwest monsoon progression.

While rainfall may remain scattered initially, meteorologists believe the coming weeks could bring stronger monsoon-related developments across the Telugu states, with isolated heavy rainfall events remaining a possibility.
