Wangala Festival & Its Significance
The Wangala Festival, also known as the 100 Drums Festival, is one of the most important cultural celebrations of the Garo tribe in Meghalaya. Held every year, usually in November, it marks the end of the harvest season and is a way of thanking the Sun God, known as Misi Saljong, for a good crop. For the Garo people, Wangala is not just a festival; it is their pride, tradition, and a moment of togetherness. Moreover, the 2025 celebration held from 6th to 8th November was the 49th edition of this festival.
During Wangala, the entire region comes alive with music, dance, food, and colourful traditional clothes. The highlight of the celebration is the rhythmic beating of hundreds of long drums, which creates a powerful sound that fills the air. Men and women perform the famous Wangala dance, moving in coordinated steps to the beats. Their costumes, made of feathers, beads, and vibrant fabrics, make the festival even more beautiful to watch.
Each part of the festival carries significance. The rituals begin with the village chief, known as the "Nokma," performing prayers to thank the deity for blessings and protection. After the rituals, the real celebration begins with dances, folk songs, and traditional rice beer and local dishes. Families invite relatives, and the entire community joins in the joy.
