Hornbill Festival & Its Significance

The Hornbill Festival is a 10-day cultural festival organized from 1st to 10th of December in the Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km from Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, and has been celebrated for the last 25 years with the collaboration of local tribal communities and the Government of Nagaland. As Nagaland has 17 major tribes, mainly Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Kachari, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, and Zeilang, these tribes come together and celebrate their distinctive cultures, for which it is called "Festival of Festivals". Moreover, the Festival is named after the "Indian Hornbill," which is considered sacred and symbolizes respect, grandeur, and alertness in Naga folklore. Therefore, the festival is celebrated to pay tribute to the bird's distinct qualities and serves as a platform to showcase the region's rich heritage of 17 tribes.

This 10-day festival highlights traditional Naga Morungs Exhibition, Art and Crafts, Food Stalls, Herbal Medicine Stalls, Flower Shows, folk performances, fashion shows, beauty contest, traditional archery, Naga wrestling, indigenous games, and the musical concert that brings both local and national artists together.

How to Attend Hornbill Festival 2025?

Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Nagaland, and one can easily apply for it online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in. Moreover, foreign nationals are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Nagaland.

How to Reach Nagaland to Attend the Hornbill Festival 2025?

By Air: Dimapur Airport is the only operational airport in Nagaland. You need to book a flight to Dimapur, and it is 69 km from Kohima.

By Rail: Dimapur Railway Station is the nearest station to Kohima and is 74 km from Kohima.

By Road: Nagaland is well-connected by road from Guwahati and Shillong, and one can go on road trips too.
