Khecheopalri Lake is located 135 km away from Gangtok, West Sikkim. It is known as the "wish fulfilling lake" and is considered sacred by Buddhists.
Various legends and folklore are associated with Khecheopalri lake. Many stories about Guru Padmasambhava and mythology regarding Buddhist goddess Tara is related with the lake. Hence, Khecheopalri lake is considered sacred and is a major Buddhist pilgrim site in Sikkim.
The Khecheopalri lake is protected as biodiversity reserve and is also kept away from pollution because of its religious significance.
An interesting fact is that birds don't allow any leaves to float in this lake. As soon as a leaf falls, birds come and pick them up. Locals relate this phenomenon with folklore and other legends.
Khecheopalri lake, originally known as Kha-Chot-Palri (meaning the heaven of Padmasambhava) has a spiritual touch and a beautiful scenery.
