Nagpur Metro Phase 3 Unveils 54.5 km Expansion Across Four Corridors, Pushing Network to 129 km

The Phase 3 plan of Nagpur Metro proposes a major 54.5-kilometre expansion across four important corridors. Once completed, the total metro network in the city will grow from 82 kilometres to about 129 kilometres. This will make Nagpur one of India's best-connected Tier-2 cities in terms of metro rail coverage.

Comprehensive Mobility Plan

The plan is part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) 2025, prepared by MahaMetro following guidelines of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. After discussions with stakeholders and the public, four new corridors were identified to improve city transport.

List of Four Corridors

• The first corridor will run from Mankapur Square to Rachna Junction along the Inner Ring Road, covering 25 km. It will help reduce traffic in Central Nagpur by allowing passengers to bypass the city centre.

• The second corridor will connect Sitabuldi to Koradi over 11.5 km. It will extend north from Kasturchand Park station and include Nagpur's first underground metro stretch of 3 km through the crowded city core, followed by 8.5 km of elevated track.

• The third corridor, 3 km long, will connect MIDC ESR to CEAT Ltd, improving last-mile connectivity in the Butibori-MIDC industrial area.

• The fourth corridor will link Khapri to New Nagpur over 15 km, supporting the development of the planned township.

Mankapur-Rachna corridor of Phase 3

The Mankapur-Rachna corridor is the largest part of Phase 3. It will change the metro system from mainly straight radial lines to a hub-and-spoke model with an orbital route. This will reduce pressure on the busy Sitabuldi interchange. Initially, buses may operate on this route before converting it to a metro line.

Sitabuldi-Koradi corridor

The Sitabuldi-Koradi corridor is expected to cost around ₹3,500 crore. Since underground construction is much more expensive than elevated lines, the average cost is higher. A Detailed Project Report will be prepared in the next nine months to finalise costs and timelines. Construction will begin only after Phase 2 is completed.
