To improve travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Central Railway is building a new railway line between Karjat and Panvel. This project will help reduce traffic on the busy existing route and make it easier for people to reach Navi Mumbai International Airport from Pune. The project is expected to be ready by December 2025 and is seen as a big step forward in transport development.
Better Travel with Less Congestion
The new rail line will be 29 kilometers long and will help manage the heavy passenger load between Karjat and Panvel. This stretch is often crowded with both local and long-distance trains. With the new line in place, there will be smoother and faster travel for thousands of daily commuters.
Central Railway has estimated the cost of this project to be around Rs 491 crore. A spokesperson from Central Railway said that the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) was sent to the Railway Board on 7th April.
A Modern Line with New Features
This new line will be the fourth on this route and is a major part of Mumbai's suburban railway system. It will include some of the longest tunnels and bridges in the area. It will be built along a new path between Panvel and Karjat. This will help ease pressure on the existing lines, especially one older track that now carries mostly goods and long-distance trains.
The project will double this older track to improve the movement of both people and cargo. This means more trains will be able to run with fewer delays.
Part of a Bigger Transport Upgrade
This new rail line is not the only one being built. Two more suburban railway lines are also under construction by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation. These too are expected to be ready by the end of 2025. Together, these projects will improve rail services in MMR and make daily travel easier and more comfortable.
Connecting Pune to Navi Mumbai Airport
