Alert Issued: Heavy Rain and Landslides in Uttarakhand; Char Dham Yatra Suspended

Uttarakhand is currently grappling with severe weather conditions, prompting the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra. Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami announced this decision on Thursday due to heavy rainfall. The Badrinath Highway has been obstructed by debris near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani, further complicating travel in the region.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Uttarakhand, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms from July 3 to July 7. Intense rain spells are expected at isolated locations. On July 4, light to moderate rainfall with thunder is anticipated in Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts, with similar conditions likely in other areas.

Weather Warnings and Road Closures

On July 5, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar districts are predicted to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder. This weather pattern is expected to continue on July 6 and 7 across various districts, including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Bageshwar.

The Yamunotri Highway has been closed for five days due to debris blocking the roads. This has isolated nearly two dozen villages from their tehsil and district headquarters. In Uttarkashi district's Sarbadiyar Patti region, roads in eight villages have suffered significant damage.

Landslides Impacting Travel

In Chamoli district, landslides have disrupted the Badrinath National Highway at Pipalkoti, Nandprayag, and Umatta. Efforts are underway to clear debris and restore traffic flow. Meanwhile, Rishikesh is preparing for the Kawad Yatra by removing road encroachments.

The road leading to Kedarnath is also blocked due to debris in the Munkatia Sliding Zone under Sonprayag area. The Rudraprayag police stated on X that "The Yatra will resume once the road is cleared".

Continuous Rainfall Worsens Situation

The mountain regions have been experiencing relentless heavy rainfall since last night. This continuous downpour has exacerbated the situation across Uttarakhand. Authorities are working diligently to manage the disruptions caused by these adverse weather conditions.

As Uttarakhand faces these challenges, residents and travelers are urged to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution while navigating affected areas.
