Trekking Nilgiris

Nilgiris is one of the most wanted spot for trekking when one is touring South India. With 24 peaks, Nilgiris is a part of Western Ghats and lies in the western end of Tamil Nadu. The picturesque beauty of Nilgiris fills the trekkers with enthusiasm, thrill and excitement.

Various altitudes, terrain and distances comprises of a trek route to the Nilgiris. Nothing can be better than treeking Nilgiris from Ooty, Kotagiri and Coonoor. Ooty gives a trekker various routes which one can take and head towards the peak. The coffee plantations, orange grooves, tea gardens and pine trees make for the ideal ambiance to trek.

Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association provides pamphlets for trekking which are of great help to trekkers. Here are some routes which an enthusiastic trekker might follow to trek Nilgiris.

Kotagiri-Elk Falls

Kotagiri is the home to Kota tribes, which is one of the core regions of Nilgiris. One starting form Kotagiri has to head towards east which takes to Kodanad View Point. The Moyar river along with the tea estates lend a captivating view from the view point. From the view point, one can head south west to view the Catherine Falls and Elk Falls.

Ooty- Parson's Peak- Mudumalai National Park

Well geared with necessary items a group can start trekking from Parsons Valley where the base camp is situated. This trekking route is indeed adventurous and offers splendid views.

Porthimund is the village where trekkers have to halt at night and relish the chilled weather of Nilgiris. Mukurthi National Park is the next place which one will be exploring on the way. Next few destinations include Pandier Hills, Pykara Falls and Mudumalai National Park which will lead one back to Ooty.

Coonoor-Lamb's Rock-The Droog

Lamb's Rock and Lady Canning's seat are two most scenic places which one only come up while trekking Nilgiris from Coonoor. The mesmerising views of the valley amazes the travellers. Dolphin's Nose is the next destination for the trekkers. It is ideal place for photography. Catherine Falls is another attraction nearby. Law's Falls and The Droog are some other view points which one can view while trekking down to Coonoor.

Ooty-Avalanche-Emerald

This trekking route in Nilgiris is a much easier one. While one is trekking by the Avalanche Dam, which lies south-west of Ooty, Mukurthi National Park is partially visible. Thick forest and serene view of the lake pleases the eyes. A night stay can be done at the guest house of Forest Department.

Trekking Nilgiris

Upper Bhavani, a picnic spot can be approached the next day, whose north Kolaribetta lies. One of the highest peaks, Kolaribetta is famous for its striking countryside views. While returning to Ooty lies Emerald, which is a village wanted as a picnic spot.

Nilgiris can be trekked throughout the year, preferably winters. Proper precautions and essentails must be taken in order to enjoy the trek. Guides are provided from the Forest Department if necessary. Guest houses at Coonoor and Kotagiri are available for acommodation.
