Yercaud: A Treasure of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has a number of tourist attractions: temples, beaches, hill stations, etc. Many places in Tamil Nadu are very popular in India. Among several beautiful destinations, Yercaud in Tamil Nadu is one such famous tourist place.

Yercaud is derived from two local words: Yeri means lake and Kaadu means forest, together forming 'Lake Forest'. This hill station surrounded by thick green vegetation and a lake is enthralling to see and experience.

Yercaud is fondly known as ' A Jewel of the South', because of it's serene environment and an inviting landscape. Situated in the Eastern Ghats of Salem district, Yercaud gives an awesome experience of peace and satisfaction.

Rocky terrains of this hill station in Tamil Nadu is a favourite among trekkers. Amidst the thick green trees, a trek in a pleasant atmosphere is the thing one can enjoy.

Yercaud may not be as famous as Ooty or Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, but its beauty is nothing less compared to these popular places.

Located in Shevaroy Hills, Yercaud was developed by David Cockburn during 1820 - 1829. He introduced the cultivation of coffee, apple and pears which are still grown in this hill station. David Cockburn's contribution gave him the name the 'Father of Yercaud'.

Yercaud's climate is moderate in most seasons and is favourable for tourists. Even in summers the temperature doesn't go too high, by making it an ideal summer destination in Tamil Nadu.

Owing to its favourable vegetation, Botanical Survey of India has maintained the National Orchidarium and a Botanical Garden. The Orchidarium with varieties of Flora and Fauna, is a tourist place in Yercaud.

Yercaud Lake with a back-drop of the hill, Killiyur Falls, Pagoda Point, Bear's Cave near Norton's Bunglow , Silk Farm and Rose Garden, Karadiyur View point, Sri Lalitha Tripura Sundari Amman Temple are the places to visit in Yercaud.

One should also visit 'Grange Estate' - the coffee estate created by M.D. Cockburn in 1820. The coffee plants were brought from Africa and till today they are the main occupation of people.

Other crops like apple, oranges, black pepper, jackfruit , etc are also grown in the estate. So your visit to this estate will definitely be a tasty one!

There is a Summer Festival held annually in the month of May. One gets to enjoy the 7 days exhibition where fairs and other colourful events happen.

Consisting of so many things, Yercaud is a perfect tourist place in Tamil Nadu. No wonder it is pleasurable when you visit this enchanting 'Jewel of the South'.
