United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) initiated World Tourism Day as international observances in the year 1980. It is commemorated every year on 27th September. The purpose of World Tourism Day is to create awareness on the role of tourism in changing cultural, social, political, and economic values worldwide.

For World Tourism Day, UNWTO always opts a social and cultural related theme and designate an ideal host country each year to embrace the theme. It is commemorated to draw attention toward global tourism. In 2018, the theme for World Tourism Day was "Tourism and Digital transformation." It was a big hit on digital media and provided a potential contribution to the sustainable development of tourism.

"Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all" is the theme for World Tourism Day in 2019.

This year the focus will be on three developing areas; education, skills, and jobs. It is a well-known fact that education and skill play a vital role in tourism to gain employment. Every year, Billions of people travel to different countries; consequently, offering jobs to nearly 250 million people, be it directly or indirectly. The tourism sector provides a lot of employment opportunity for people. One out of 10 jobs offered in the world is by the tourism sector. Tourism is creating decent job every minute. Most of the tourists' destinations like Maldives, Bhutan, Seychelles, Cape Verde, Cambodia have 40% employment rate through Travel and Tourism.

India is the host country for World Tourism day in 2019. India is more than just mountains, beaches, festivals, natural heritages, diverse flora, and fauna; it is a land of bliss. Not only do tourists carry values of Indian culture back home, but they also practice India Tourism motto "ATITHI DEVO BHAVA" in their respective countries. Millions of people travel from across the world to discover the beauty of INCREDIBLE INDIA.

UNWTO has put forward 17 Sustainable development goals through a platform called "Tourism for SDG's" to encourage future generation. You can perform the following activities with the help of sustainable development goals:

3. Share content related to Tourism and Sustainable development.

On World Tourism Day heritage sites, museums, cultural venues, and other tourists attraction give free entry or reduce the charges of tickets to attract tourist and foster tourism.
