6 Winter Treks in the Himalayas

Want to have a thrilling winter?! Then try these winter treks in the mesmerising Himalayas?

These winter treks are considered one of the most adventurous ones in India. Trudging along some mountainous regions, in knee deep snow is definitely challenging. To name a few: Chandrashila Trek, Chadar Trek, Kedarkantha Trek, Sandakphu Trek, etc. are some of the famous winter trekking trails in the Himalayas.

Check out these hiking trails for an exhilarating journey in North India.

Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha Trek

Best Time:December - April
Kedarkantha Trek either starts from Dehradun or Sankri Village. Kedarkantha Peak is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas and is considered one of the easy treks.

Starting from Mussoorie,the route goes to Sankri villageand passes on Juda-Ka-Talab camp site. Further, to Kedarkantha base camp and then Kedarkantha peak.

Dzongri Trek

Dzongri Trek

Best Time: April - June
Dzongri Trek is one of the best treks in North Sikkim. Beginning from Yuksom, Dzongri trek covers some of the enchanting vistas of the Himalayan ranges in Sikkim.

Hiking in January/February is not possible here because of extreme conditions but the snowfall remains till May.

One can also go further to Gochala Pass or Mt.Kanchengjunga in this trek route. It is one of the small winter treks, yet a beautiful one in the Himalayas.

Nag Tibba Trek

Nag Tibba Trek

Best Time: January - March
Nag Tibba Range is one of the 3 major ranges of Lesser Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Nag Tibba (Serpent's Peak) is a trekkers paradise.

There are 2 trekking trails: One is from Pantwari Village to Nag Tibba peak and another is from Devalsari Village which is around 50km from Mussoorie.

Devalsari route covers the forest areas and also beautiful vistas of the Pir Panjal Range, Doon Valley and so on.

Sandakphu Trek

Sandakphu Trek

Best Time: October - December
Sandakphu Trek can be called as a photographer's paradise because it offers the grand vistas of Mt.Everest , Kangchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse ranges.

Sandakphu Trek starts from Jaubhari and also covers Kalapokhri (Black Pond) on the way to Sandakphu Peak.

Chamba - Dalhousie Trek

Chamba - Dalhousie Trek

Best Time: October - December
Dalhousie - Chamba trek is also one of the best winter treks in the Himalayas.

Starting from Dalhousie, the route passes through Kalatop, Khajjiar and then reaches Chamba.

Tourists can cover Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary and also see the views of Dhauladar Mountain ranges in this trek.

Prashar Lake Trek

Best Time: February - March
Prashar Lake or Parashar Lakein Himachal Pradesh is known for its mythological stories. It is believed that sage Prashar or Parasharmeditated on the banks of this lake.

There is also a temple belonging to 13th century. Prashar Lake is around 50km from Mandi and the trek is one of the best offbeat winter trails in India.

Prashar Lake trek covers some of the beautiful villages and the scenic vistas of other mountain peaks of the Himalayas.
