Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary is considered as the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu. This forests was also the home of the legendary Indian bandit leader, kidnapper and murderer Veerapan, who made a living poaching ivory and sandalwood from the forests and selling them in the black market. Accommodation is available at Government Guest House, Hasanur and cottages at Dhimbam. There are famous temples around sanctuary including Bannari Amman Temple and Kongalli Temple in the Thalavady Range which is deep inside the forest.
Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve
This tiger reserve is situated in the Southern Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari District, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu and is the second largest protected area in Tamil Nadu. If lucky, travellers can spot the wild beasts in their natural habitat. This reserve has access by road to Thirukarangudi and Sivasailam which is about 55 km away from Tirunelveli. Buses are plying to reach Mundanthurai and Upper Kodayar and these roads pass through the Tiger Reserve. For travellers reaching by train, the nearest railway station, Tirunelveli is 50 km from Mundanthurai and 45 km from Kalakad.
Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary
This wildlife sanctuary is located in the Anaimalai Hills of Pollachi and Valparai in Coimbatore district. Apart from varied wildlife animals, the sanctuary has over 100 species of orchids, a wide variety of ferns and palms abode here. Bus service is available frequently from Pollachi to Topslip, a small town in Valparai. The nearest railway station is Pollachi which is 35 km from the sanctuary and nearest airport is Coimbatore located 87 km from the sanctuary.
Comfortable accommodation is available at Topslip on prior booking at the reception center in Pollachi. There are cottages and group accommodation facilities available at Topslip to suit different budgets. Bookings are done at the forest office in Pollachi.
Vallanadu Black Buck Sanctuary
Vallanadu is the southernmost place in India where a natural population of Blackbuck exists. The important town in the vicinity of the sanctuary is Tirunelveli, which has all facilities for hotel accommodation for travellers visiting the sanctuary. Frequent bus and taxi services are also available from Thoothukudi to Tirunelveli. Government Circuit House is available at Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. Tamil Nadu Tourist House also available at Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.
Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary
The Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary lies mostly in Virdhunagar district and partly in Madurai district nestling in the high ranges of the western ghats. The sanctuary can be visited by travellers throughout the year. There are two dams - Pilavakkal and Koilar situated along the foothills of the sanctuary which are the best places to see water birds and other wildlife species. The nearest towns are Rajapalayam and Srivilliputhru, and good lodges are available to travellers.
