India is planning to roll out e-passports for safe, easy international travel, The external Affairs Minister, Jaishankar announced on Friday. "It gives me great pleasure to join all our Passport Issuing Authorities in India and abroad on the occasion of the Passport Seva Divas 2022," he added.
Jaishankar also declared that the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) will be going on board an improved and upgraded version of PSP V2.0 to safeguard a digital ecosystem among all stakeholders and offer better passport services to citizens.
India's new e-passport program will allow people to travel with their passports online, eliminating the need for them to be physically present at an embassy or consulate when they can apply for a digital copy of their passport. The e-passports will also be protected by biometric data, making them difficult to fake.
The move is aimed at reducing document fraud and increasing security at airports across the world. The e-passport will have biometric features like facial recognition, iris scan, and fingerprint scanning, and will also have a chip that can store data that can be accessed by authorized agencies only.
There has been a huge amount of fraud in passports in recent years due to which many countries have banned Indian nationals from entering their countries without valid visas or documents indicating when they entered the country last time and how long they intend to stay there.
What are e-passports?
An electronic passport is a passport that has been electronically stored in the Department of Homeland Security database, which means that it can be verified when you enter a country using it and will allow you entry if you're travelling internationally.
E-Passports contain all the information you need to enter your country of citizenship when you travel, including a digital image of your passport card and biometric data that can be used to verify your identity. It is the latest technology to make life easier. They are not only faster and more convenient, but they're also more secure and fraud-proof.
