Formed in 1638, Shahjahanabad became the capital of the Mughal Empire during the period of Shahjahan. It served as capital to the Mughal Empire until its downfall in the uprising of 1857, when the British Empire completely took charge of the capital and started ruling the country. Today, Shahjahanabad site is the part of Old Delhi and houses most of the historical buildings of the Mughal era.

Commencing in 1584, Lahore remained the capital of the Mughal Empire until 1598, when the capital was shifted to Shahjahanabad under the rule of Akbar's grandson, Shahjahan.

Today, it is one of the alpha cities in the world and is considered as the major city of Pakistan on account of its political and historical significance. The major tourist attractions in Lahore include Lahore Fort, Wazir Khan's Mosque, Tomb of Jahangir, Shahi Hammam, etc.
