Once the region of Vedanthangal was a hunting ground but the locals realized the importance of this habitat and with the help of the support from the local government bodies this area turned out to be a protected zone Since the 18th century, the villagers have been very protective about the birds in the sanctuary.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is one of the oldest lake bird sanctuaries in India. The efforts of the Forest Department and the villagers has been fruitful as it houses native as well as migratory birds.

Ofcourse, its unique ecosystem is a major factor in the sustenance of birds. The sanctuary is covered by a large lake with an inflow from small canals. Hence, it is also one of the best habitats for water birds as well.

Vedanthangal is a home to many species of birds. Native birds often stay in the reserve whereas migratory birds come in the winter season. It is a bliss to see birds like moorhens, painted storks, sandpipers, egrets and so on. Some migratory birds fly from different continents like Australia and countries like Srilanka, Siberia and Burma. Open billed stork, gray pelicans and garganeys are some of the migratory birds found in this sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

The period from November to February is the best time to visit Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary. Tourists can see native as well as migratory birds in this season.

How to Reach Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is around 87km from Chennai. It is connected through NH45 (NH48) via Chengalpet.

By Bus: You can take buses from Chennai to Chengalpet and from there take a bus to Padalam Junction. The bird sanctuary is 16km from Padalam Junction.

By Train: Catch trains from Chennai towards Chengalpet or Padalam Railway Station.

Easy way to reach from Padalam Junction is to take shared transport.

  • Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a well-maintained area, please don't litter the place.
  • Entry Fee has to be paid along with the camera and webcam fee.
  • Don't forget to get the binoculars which are available at the counter.
  • Please don't disturb the birds or hurt them in any way.
