Unexplored Monuments of Agra

One of the former capitals of India, Agra in Uttar Pradesh is a hub of monuments that add to the pride of Indian heritage. Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri are some of the known and widely popular monuments of Agra. Some picturesque gardens like Ram Bagh and Mehtab Bagh also attracts innumerable tourists round the globe. But are you aware of some of the unexplored monuments of Agra?

Though not renowned, these unexplored monuments are equally a captivating part of Agra tourism.

Chini Ka Rauza

Chini ka Rauza is the home to the tomb of renowned poet and scholar, Allama Afzal Khan Mullah. A funerary momument in Agra, this famous scholar was also the Prime Minister of Shah Jahan. River Yamnuna lies on the western side of the tomb. It is one of the masterpieces of Indo-Persian architecture.

The glazed tile work is very artistic and finely done. This rectagular tomb gets its name from the colourful tiles which are also known as chini. The inscriptions on the walls of the tiles add uniqueness to this unexplored monument. The tomb being Afghan style has Islamic texts inscribed on them.

Jaswant Ki Chatri

This unexplored monument is the only heritage building built by a Hindu during the rule of Mughals. This cenotaph is situated by the river Yamuna and is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India. The Chatri was dedicated to princess of Bundi who commited sati for her dead husband, Amar Singh Rathore. The architecture is captivating for being the mixture of Hindu and Mughal work. Jali or mesh work found in Agra Fort is also seen here.

Mariam's Tomb

Emperor Akbar's wife Mariam Zamani or Mariam-uz-Zamani's tomb is one of the unexplored building of Agra. This site of Indian heritage can be found at Sikandra where also lies the tomb of emperor Akbar. She was emperor Jehangir's mother, as expressed by Jehangir's autobiography. A mosque in Lahore is dedicated to her. She was originally a Rajput princess belonging to Amber. Slight paintings on the plastered walls are still visible.

Roman Catholic Cemetry

Another display of huge love and affection can be seen at Roman Catolic Cemetry which was built by Ann Hessings for her Dutch husband, John William Hessings. Also known as 'The Miniature Taj' or the 'Red Taj Mahal', this cemetry is also regarded as one of the most striking European monuments in India, though based on Mughal architecture. Hessings served the Nizams, Marathas, French and many other Indian rulers. The inscriptions at the centoph are written in English.
