The distance from Udupi to Honnavar is 126 km and takes about 2h and 42 min via NH66. It is one of the perfect destinations for a one day trip.

There is never a lazy day for travellers I suppose and the same thing happens to me almost all the time. Every time I want to hide under my blanket I feel places calling out to me to visit them. It seems funny, yet interesting to sometimes escape into the nature all alone to explore places and come back with a bag of stories to narrate.

And this time it was Honnavar calling me. The journey from Udupi to Honnavar takes around 2h and 42 min and this was the route I had to take Udupi-Kundapura-Murudeshwar-Honnavar.

The clock struck 6:30 AM and my cabbie arrived at the gate. Picking my diary and travelling bag I set off for the day. My first destination was the hypnotising Marvanthe beach.

Marvanthe Beach, near Kundapura, is a perfect blend of beauty and boldness, the waves in this beach is very violent yet hypnotising. Marvanthe is at a distance of 55 km from Udupi and it takes an hour to reach there. I must say that it is amazing to witness a beach on one side and a river on the other side.

Yes, you heard it right; the Suparnika river runs adjacent to Marvanthe beach and almost touches the Arabian sea making it a beautiful sight. The rocks on Marvanthe beach makes it a perfect background for photographers and you must not miss to taste the tender coconuts sold here.

I spent almost an hour sitting on the rocks feeling the cold breeze and looking at the waves before I started my journey towards the Anegudde Vinayaka temple in Kumbashi which is at a distance of 25 km.

Kumbashi is famous for its Lord Ganapathi temple and legends say that sage Agasthya had performed penance in this holy land to seek blessings from Lord Indira. It is also believed that the demon Kumbhasura was killed here by Bhima with a weapon given by Lord Ganesha. Hence, the place is known as Kumbashi.

The temple is spread across a large area and the idol of Ganesha is so attractive that you will be drowned in divinity. A lot of devotees flock here to seek blessings from the Lord and offer Garika(Grass) to get their wishes fulfilled.

We stopped at a nearby hotel on the highway after offering prayers at Kumbashi and had the local Udupi delicacy called Buns. It's a sweet delicacy made out of mixing all purpose flour, curd and bananas deep fried in the oil which is served with coconut chutney and sambhar. We then headed towards the famous and the crowded Murudeshwara.

We were at Murudeshwara at almost 11 AM, I stood stunned looking up at the 237.5 ft gigantic temple tower. Lord Shiva here sits on a hill called Kanduka which is surrounded by the Arabian sea on three sides. I walked inside the temple to seek blessings from the Lord of destruction and as I walked out, I ran towards the beach.

Water never disappoints me and the water here is just too magical. Standing amidst the serene surroundings and the tallest statue of Lord Shiva, known for his penance and meditation; I was pulled into a state of trance. After spending time to my heart's content, I explored the place a little, picked some souvenirs and had a cold drink from a nearby juice centre.

After Murudeshwara, I wanted to go to Idagunji but I chose to visit it on my way back. So, we headed towards Apsarakonda, a dreamy place I always wanted to visit.

Apsarakonda, in Honnavar has an eco-beach with very less people, the place is filled with lush green forests and as you walk inside, it makes you feel like you are in heaven. The trees sway beautifully and dances to the tune of the wind taking you away to their land of music.

There are steps that lead you to the view point of Apsarakonda and the waterfalls. It is believed that the angels came here and bathed in the holy water of this place. There is a separate place near the waterfalls dedicated to serpent gods called as Nagabana, and making noise inside the waterfalls is restricted as it may disturb the snakes.

This place also has temples of Lord Narasimhaswamy and Umamba Mahaganapathy on the other side of the waterfalls. It's amazing to see the water meeting the land from the top of this place and spending time here is definitely worthwhile. There is also a cave within the premises and it is believed that Pandavas had once taken shelter here.

This place is certain to make you fall in love with the true nature it offers. I was so drowned in the beguiling beauty of Apsarakonda, caught the glimpse of the sun setting, closed my eyes and captured the experiences and started off to Idagunji.

We stopped by on our way to have a cup of coffee and some 'goli bhajes', a local Udupi delicacy and visited the Idagunji temple. After seeking blessings from Lord Ganapathi and Lord Vishnumurthy we started our journey home.

It was an amazing day, every time a place calls me I get heebie-jeebies but today the experiences were meditative, serene, divine and magical. So that's another trip of my travel bucket list fulfilled. And again, here I am cherishing the moments of this journey until the next destination beckons me.
