Nishani Motte is a lesser-known mountain peak in the Western Ghats in Coorg. Famous for its abundant natural beauty, pleasant weather & vast coffee estates, Coorg tops it to the list of weekend getaways in South India. For the trekkers, Nishani Motte is a perfect weekend trek from Bangalore.

Translated to the local language, Nishani Betta means a marked hill. During the British period, the peak served as a mark for directions to several places along the hill range, hence the name. The tranquil peak is a part of Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in the Brahmagiri range of mountains, home to a stunning wildlife and animals including elephants and leopards.

Getting There

Coorg is around 300 km from Bangalore and 118 km from Mysore. Being a popular tourist place, it is well-connected by road. Arrive at the serene Bhagamandala village situated next to the Cauvery river in the Kodagu district of Karnataka.

As the trail goes through a forest that is a part of the wildlife sanctuary, trekkers need to obtain a permit from the forest check post. The trek, however, commences from Talacauvery, which is around 8 km from Bhagamandala.

Best Time To Visit

Beautiful in every season, the trail throws in its unique charm as well as challenges to the trekkers. Hence, depending on one's interest and capacity, trekkers hike through the forests & hill all round the year.

The Trail

The 15 km moderate-trek commencing from the rich Shola forests and lush meadows turns beautiful and exciting after every few steps. The trail is not well-marked as it is a fairly uncommon trek and therefore, the advice and guidance of the Forest Department has to be followed diligently.

The trail passes through refreshing water streams and dense forest covers, the path is especially beautiful and lush post monsoon. During the monsoon season, many leech colonies can be encountered along the way and one needs to be prepared for the same.

Home to various species of animals and plants, it's a great place for nature lovers. During the walk, footprints of many animals can be spotted, who might have passed from there just before you. A strenuous walk filled with mesmerizing views of nature through a ridge and dense forest and the final stretch with around 60-degree incline will eventually lead you to the summit.
