Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary also is known as the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous of the protected reserve forest network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu.

The sanctuary is rich in biodiversity and an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the first of the 14 biospheres in India. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 345 km2 and in four ranges namely Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat and Tholpetty.

Established in 1973, it is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala State. It comes under the Project Elephant jurisdiction in 1992 to protect wild elephant populations.

Wayanad sanctuary is rich with fauna and flora and convenience of getting food and water throughout the year is the main attraction of the sanctuary.

Getting There

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 261 km from Bengaluru, 125 km from Mysore and 134 km from Calicut.

More About The Sanctuary

The forests have a historical importance as it was from here, Pazhassi Raja, the great King and freedom fighter, organised warfare against British East India Company in 1805. Inside the sanctuary, there are 17 permanent anti-poaching camps and two watch towers.

Elephant rides and jeep safaris with an authorised guide is arranged by the Forest Department to explore the great wilds. A special permission is required from the Forest Department in order to enter the sanctuary.

The visitors are restricted to the outer zone of the sanctuary, only researchers and wardens are allowed to go to the inner zone of the sanctuary.

The flora in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary have the typical South Indian moist deciduous forests and West Coast semi-evergreen forests and plantations of teak, eucalyptus and oak. .

More than half of the sanctuary is boosted with teak and eucalyptus plantations. Amidst the varied flora, Wayanad Sanctuary has many rare herbs and medicinal plants.

The sanctuary comes under Protect Elephant and one can spot a herd of elephants roaming in the area. In addition to elephants, it houses 45 species of mammals, 203 species of birds, 45 species of reptiles, 30 species of amphibians and 59 species of fishes.

The common mammals found in the sanctuary are tiger, leopard, panther, jungle cat, civet cat, monkey, Malabar giant squirrel, common langur, wild dog, bison, bear, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, common otter, deer etc.

Birds such as peacock, babbler, cuckoo, owl, woodpecker, jungle fowl etc., are also found in plenty in Wayanad Sanctuary.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit is from the monthof August to March. The sanctuary remains closed for visitors in from March 10 to April 11.

Entry Regulations

1. Visitors are allowed only during the visiting hours.
2. Duration of visiting is maximum 1.30 h.
3. Maximum number of visitors per vehicle is as per its permitted seating capacity.
4. Visiting must be only with a tourist guide/forest personnel.
5. Plastic materials are not allowed during the visit.

Everyday From 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
