Orchha is an artificial island situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The word Orchha meaning 'a hidden place' justifies its name as an undiscovered gem. History narrates itself starting from the Fort of Orchha built by the first Bundela King Rudra Pratap to the Sunder Mahal that re-tells the love story of Prince Dhurbhajan, who fell in love with a Muslim girl.

The Chaturbhuj Temple

The Chaturbhuj Temple

Built by Raja Bir Sing Deo, the Chaturbhuj temple in Orchha is extremely old, dating back to the 9th century. With its tall archways and impressive entrances, the temple is outstanding in its design. Built for the Hindu God Vishnu, this temple dominates the landscape with its towering spires. Observe the ornate lotus symbols adorning the walls along with various other motifs.

Built by the Mughals after the defeat of Bundela King Vir Singh Deo, the Jahangir Mahal is considered to be an exquisite example of classical Mughal architecture. The imposing domes built as per Timurid customs, large Iwans, detailed jalliwork and elevated structure is a view you should not miss!

The Various Chhatris

Many Chhatris or Cenotaphs dot the banks of the Betwa river and pay homage to the past rulers of Orchha. They are frequented by travellers as a key sightseeing spot. These structures are a photographer's delight. Mostly constructed on an elevated platform, these Chhatris have unique angular arches as their upper portion.

How To Reach Orchha

By Road: Orchha is located between Jhansi (19 km) and Khajuraho (178 km). It can also be reached by taking a bus or taxi from Gwalior (120 km).

By Rail: The nearest railway station is located in Jhansi (19 km) from here you can proceed by taxi or bus.

By Air: Khajuraho is the nearest airport (178 km) from Orchha.
