Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu also called the 'Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu' is a vital centre for art, architecture and culture. Many of the Living Chola Temples that are UNESCO heritage sites are in and around Thanjavur. It is also popular for the Tanjore style of painting. Visit Thanjavur and let the scintillating greenery, temple architecture and murmuring streams render you breathless!

Here are some tempting statistics, 70 hairpin beds up the hills, and around 1300 steps to climb down (and then back up) to the 300 ft Agaya Gangai waterfalls makes Kolli hills in Tamil Nadu a great adventure destination. Yet another lesser frequented travel destination, Dharmapuri has a lot to offer, especially in the monsoon season. Among the most popular places to visit in Dharmapuri is the Hogenakkal Waterfalls. Located on the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, this is the entry point of Kaveri into Tamil Nadu. The force at which the water falls over the rocks earned the name Hogenakkal meaning 'Smoky Rocks'. The monsoons bring in both the waters and the travellers.

Munnar meaning the confluence of three rivers, is located in Kerala and is one of the best places to visit in South India in July. A green carpet of tea estates covers the landscape for as far as the eye can see. Interspersing trees that might be a few hundred years old, wet walkways after the rains and pretty birds drying off is a sight available only in Munnar. Take long walks complemented by hot cups of mountain fresh tea, and you got yourself an unforgettable monsoon holiday!

Among the best tourist destinations in South India is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India - The Jog Falls. Located in Karnataka's Shimoga district, the waterfall plunging from 830 ft is created by the Sharavathi River. The different parts of the falls are ideally named as per their characteristics; the Raja, the Roarer, the Rocket and the Rani. There are steps leading across viewpoints to the bottom of the hills, and you can have the picturesque experience of climbing down nearly 1400 steps.

Chikmagalur is a must-see tourist place in South India. Packed with pepper estates, coffee estates and thick forests, Chikmangalur is a nature lover's haven! Located in Karnataka, it is referred to as the 'Coffee Land'. Popular as a hill station among tourists there are many options for stay. Opt for a home stay experience in one of the remote estates, take morning walks through the coffee and pepper plants, watch the glittering sunsets and enjoy the fireflies as the flit about in the night. If you are lucky, you can also see peacocks and in the rain they might just break into a dance for you!
