Visiting the zoo probably is the one place that excites people of all ages, right from a 5 year old who recently learnt the names of all animals to a 70 year old who wants to rekindle old memories of watching animals. India being rich with nature, scenic landscape and wildlife, is home to quite a few magnificent zoological parks, that are spread all over the country.
Zoos in India usually house more than just animals. They sometimes are accompanied by snake parks, animal orphanages, bird sanctuaries, etc. While there are over 50 zoos in India, here are the 5 best zooological parks that you mustn't miss while on a visit to the respective places.
Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Pune
The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park which is commonly known as Rajiv Gandhi Zoo, is located in Pune, Maharashtra. Famous for the Katraj Snake Park that is found in the premises, the two other parts of the place consists of a zoo and an animal orphanage.
Russells viper, Indian rock python and king cobra are some of the species of snakes that can be found in the zoo. You will get to witness animals like white tigers, Bengal tigers, leopards and birds like peafowl and blackbucks.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai
Also known as Vandalur Zoo, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park is India's largest zoo that is spread across an area of 1,300 acres. It is located in Chennai's suburb called Vandalur in Tamil Nadu. The zoo is home to innumerable species of mammals, fishes, amphibians, insects, etc.
With dry deciduous and dry evergreen scrub vegetation, the park is home to many different animals like baboons, lion-tailed macaques, barking deers, etc. Other attractions of the zoo are the butterfly house, walk-through aviary, reptile house, crocodile enclosure, to name a few.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling
Mostly known for housing cute red pandas, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoologicial Park , also known as Darjeeling Zoo, is the largest high altitude zoo in India since it is perched at an elevation of 7000 ft.
Apart from red pandas, the zoo houses quite a few endangered animals, such as Siberian tigers, mountain goats, etc. The zoo is also a birdwatcher's delight since it attracts birds of many different species, such as rose ring parakeets and hill mynas to name a few. The zoo reamins open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and will remain closed on Thursdays.

Mysore Zoo
The Mysore Zoo, officially known as the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, is one of the most popular sites of attraction in Mysore. Here you can visit plenty of different species of animals like zebras, giraffes, lions, tigers, white rhinoceros, Indian elephants, etc.
Perfect to visit with the kids since these animals are right out of their story books! The beauty of the zoo is enhanced by a 77 acre Karanji Lake, found on the picturesque Chamundi hills.

Amirthi Zoological Park, Vellore
This zoo is named after the river Amirthi that flows right beside the place. Apart from the wildlife, the park is a beautiful place that has waterfalls and lush greenery. For an escape into the nature along with discovering animals, this is certainly the place to go to. Visitors spend some time near the scenic waterfalls, which is at its best during monsoon.
Some of the wildlife inhabitants of the zoo are mongooses, crocodiles, foxes and hedgehogs, along with unique birds like love birds, red headed parrots, ducks, etc.

Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad
Also known as Hyderabad Zoo, the Nehru Zoological Park is in Hyderabad, Telangana. A specialty about this zoo is the nocturnal house, which is home to all the nocturnal birds, where the days and nights are reversed so the birds are active when the visitors arrive.
Nocturnal birds like fruit bats, mottled wood owls, great horned owls, barn owls can be witnessed in this house. Animals that can be seen in this park includes Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, antelopes, etc.
