The majestic structure of Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace was the grandest palace in those times. It was built by Thirumalai Nayak, one of the greatest kings of Nayaks of Madurai. Unfortunately, a part of the main palace is remaining today. Even this portion of the palace is a visual treat as it portrays the grandeur of royal era.

Structure of Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace
Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace is built with a fusion of Dravidian, Rajput, European and Mughal styles of architecture. Its exquisite interiors and huge surroundings give it a luxurious look. Originally, this palace was about four times bigger than todays remaining complex. Most parts of the palace has vanished over time.

Earlier, the palace was divided into two portions namely, Swarga Vilasam (Celestial Pavilion) and Ranga Vilasam and majorityof the palace was demolished in the 18th century. Today, the throne room and the assembly hall of Swarga Vilasam along with a few other structures remain.
The large arcade gallery (assembly hall) looks gigantic with white coloured pillars supporting the building. It is said that it was constructed using ar brickwork and Chunnaman ( a mix of shell lime and egg white).

Light and Sound Shows with an audio explaining about the history is done every evening. The palace looks beautiful decked in light.

Light and Sound Show (audio in English) timings in Thirumalai Nayak Palace is from 6.45 PM to 7.35 PM. Tamil Show (audio) is from 8 PM to 8.50PM.
You can also check out the exotic interiors and the large corridors, throne of the king, garden and so on inside the palace.
