A Rant: Annoying Things About Travelling

Cynthia del Río

When it comes to travel, it is not just about regaling travel adventures, gorgeous pictures of picturesque locales and dreamy sunsets over verdant hilltops. There is another side to travelling as well which is not so glam. With illnesses, traffic, pollution, conservative ideologies, or crowds that spoil the idyllic vision of fabled cities around the country, travelling comes with a few irksome stumbling blocks that are going to niggle the heck out of you. Brace yourself for the one helluva ride which is travelling but do not let this lyrical grouch dampen your spirits. Here are a few things to be prepared for while you are chasing your wanderlust.

1. The Subtle Art Of Packing

1. The Subtle Art Of Packing

Arthur Edelman

Packing your bags before the trip is one of the most stressful things to encounter with. From struggling to keep your travel bags light-weight to dealing with the fancies of looking all pretty and decked up on your vacation with proper clothes and accessories, is a perpetual battle most people are yet to conquer. Now, there is no definitive guide to pack but packing too little or too much is never the answer. It gets very tricky to strike a balance between the two and hence it is a craft yet to be mastered by many.

2. Delayed Flights

Who doesn't grumble about protracted flight delays? You may grit your teeth and grunt for hours but issues like delayed flights are something beyond anyone's reach. There is not much you can do about them, instead beat the stress by killing time and don't let the layover hauling at an airport sour your mood.

3. Public Restrooms

9 out of 10 public restrooms take the phrase 'get down, get dirty' quite literally. Most public washrooms open doors to some horrifyingly disgusting sights that may scar you for life. But you gotta do, what you oughta do! Timing your bowel movements or holding it off by avoiding drinking fluids is not an option when you are out on the road. Using filthy public restrooms is unquestionably one of the most annoying things about travel.

4. Language Barriers

Most Indians speak at least three languages, typically their native language, Hindi and English. Knowing that you can get around with English might be a relief. But in most cases this is not always the instance. Driving through the country would want you to make pit stops in little villages, where you may not be able to communicate with the locals. As much fun as it is to play the dumb charades game of body language to try to communicate, there may be a time when you really need to get information across but won't be able to because of the language barriers.

5. Haggling

How to explore without getting caught up in the ever-present haggling traps? From taxi rides to markets, be prepared to get hounded. It is unavoidable, and while you know you are being ripped off on that 'hand-made souvenir' you buy it anyway! Watch out for conniving groups and individuals that deliberately devise scams to fool tourists.
