Madh Fort

Located at Madh Island and surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the west, Madh Fort dates back to the era of the Portuguese India several centuries ago. However, later on, it was captured by the Marathas and subsequently by the British in the 18th century.
The fort is located at a distance of about 15 km from the locality of Malad and can be accessed by a boat or a ferry. Despite being accessible, it remains unexplored throughout the year. If you are a history lover, then Madh Fort is definitely your calling.
Mahim Fort
Another beauty awaiting popularity amongst tourists, Mahim Fort was constructed during the 16th century and was one of the strongest forts in the region. However, the exact history of the fort is still unknown.
As per historical records, Mahim Fort flourished mainly under the Portuguese control until it was captured by the Marathas a few decades later. Later on, it was conquered by the British army during the first Anglo-Maratha War in the late 18th century. Today, the fort is rarely visited by tourists and has been left in a dilapidated condition.
However, it is a popular evening destination for the locals who come here to laze by its historic walls and gaze at the tumultuous waves of the Arabian Sea. Bandra Fort
Located at the southernmost tip of Bandra, also known as Land's End, in Mumbai, Bandra Fort dates back to the 1640s when the region was under the control of the Portuguese army. The fort was built by the Portuguese as a watchtower to keep an eye on the nearby regions, thereby, saving their empire from invaders.
However, it was invaded by the Marathas in the early 18th century when the decline of the Portuguese was at its peak. Later on, Bandra Fort was controlled by the British in the late 18th century.

Sewri Fort
Overlooking Mumbai Harbour, Sewri Fort was established by the British in 1680 to serve as a watchtower. However, it couldn't stay under their rule for a long period, as after 8 years, the Siddis, the regional rulers, attacked the fort and captured it with the help of their army of 20000 men.
Later on, when the regional powers declined, the fort was used as a cell to hold prisoners and other criminals. Today, it is under the care of the State Department of Archaeology and Museums and is going through a renovation.
You must visit Sewri Fort if you desire to learn about the regional powers in Mumbai which were ended by the British army in the 19th century. This monumental fort has a lot to tell about the past of this dream city.
Sion Fort
Sion Fort is located on a hillock and was established in the late 17th century by the East India Company. Today, it is lying in ruins and is a forgotten entity of Mumbai. However, it is still a weekend getaway for history lovers.
