Odisha is a land which is not only known for its vast seashores, architectural marvels, the Rath Yatra but also for its hill stations, which are less spoken of. These natural beauties are very seldom visited; while most of them head to the seashore for their own share of surfing and building sand castles, the hilly retreats, which the place exhibits, are often given a miss.

Unlike most other hill stations, the hill stations of Odisha are not filled with tourists, which make them unique and more beautiful. The hilly retreats of the place are indeed the perfect locations for one to rejuvenate away from the mundane city and work life. Have a look at some of the best hilly getaways from Odisha.

Tensa Hill

Tensa is a small hill station which is surrounded by dense evergreen forests and green hills. The hill station is located at a distance of 110 km from the city of Rourkela at an altitude of 3700 m above sea level.

Due to its high altitude, the place offers spectacular and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and forests. One of the major attractions here is the Shanti Stupa, the Khandadhar waterfall and a couple of natural water springs and falls in the area.

Chandragiri

Chandragiri

Also known as Jiranga, the place is one of the Tibetan settlements in the country. The place is well known for its scenic beauty and picturesque landscape which is surrounded by tropical forests, rivers and mountain slopes, making it one of the best places to visit.

The Padmasambhava Mahavihara Monastery here is one considered to be one of the largest monasteries in South Asia which was inaugurated in the year 2010 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

The Deuli Hill is known for being the biggest range of rock-cut caves; along with the ruins of a grand stupa, several other archaeological findings can be found here. The stupa here dates back to the Asokan period which is sometime in the 3rd century BC.

As per the travel accounts of a Chinese traveller, the stupa was built by the emperor Ashoka himself to spread the message of Buddhism.

Taptapani

Situated at an altitude of 1800 ft above sea level, Taptapani is well known for its hot water springs. The place also gets its name from the natural hot water
springs, which are believed to have medicinal properties.

The water springs have a large amount of sulphur in them, which reduces and cures various skin-related diseases. According to local legends the water springs are said to be more than 300 years old and are worshipped as Goddess Kandhuni.

Daringbadi

Daringbadi

Fondly called the Kashmir of Odisha, the place is surrounded by pine woods, coffee plantations and gorgeous valleys. The place was discovered by a British officer named Dering, who called the place Deringbadi-"badi" in the local language means "village"-and with the passage of time Deringbadi came to be known as Daringbadi.

The hamlet is one of the best places, where one can get exposure to the various tribal settlements here. Located close by is the Belghar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home a wide range of flora and fauna. The place is also home to the Dogira Khond tribal sect, who are well known for their agricultural skills.
