The Celebrated Waterfalls Of Northeast India

The striking land of Northeast India is definitely a piece of paradise which is nestled away from the chaos and mundane life of living in a city. The beauty of this land not only lies in its majestic peaks, untouched woods and the valleys but also in its majestic waterfalls which the land is home to.

As a matter of fact, the northeast is home to some of the tallest waterfalls of the country which are truly a sight to catch amidst the gushing water which makes its way down great heights. This would leave you dumbfounded. A large number of visitors come here from various nooks and corners of the country and also from across the globe to soak themselves in its pristine beauty and its cascades.

Take a look at some of the crowd pulling waterfalls of the region.

1. Elephant Falls

The Elephant Falls is truly an amazing waterfall which is located on the outskirts of Shillong. The falls got its name from a British officer who spotted an elephant shaped rock close to it. The cascading beauty is a fusion of three mighty rivers and is set amidst a small valley of ferns which is enveloped by rocks and is a graceful sight to be seen.

2. Nohkalikai Falls

2. Nohkalikai Falls

At about 1115 ft, the Nohkalikai is one of the tallest and the most beautiful falls located in Cherrapunji, which is considered as the world's second wettest place. The water received due to heavy rainfall gets collected on a hilltop plateau which flows down during the dry months starting from December to February. The unique falls is surrounded with green forests which further adds on to its beauty.

3. Langshiang Falls

3. Langshiang Falls

The Langshiang Falls has a height of approximately 1106 ft and is found in the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The falls takes birth from the confluence of two emerging from the Kynshi river. To reach the falls one has to trek to the Nongkhnum River Island first, and later proceed further to reach the falls.

4. Nohsngithiang Falls

4. Nohsngithiang Falls

The 1033 ft high Nohsngithiang Falls is also known as Mawsmai Falls or Seven Sisters Falls. The falls has seven distinct cascading strands of water running down the edges and slopes of limestone cliffs. The clear, bubbling streams getting lost in hazy sparks creates one of the most intoxicating sights.

Triple Falls is situated in Nagaland's Dimapur, which is a beautiful three-tiered falls with a height of about 280 ft. The water of the falls merges with that of a clear pool which is formed naturally.

6. Bong Bong Falls

6. Bong Bong Falls

The Bong Bong Falls is also known as Nuranang or Jang falls and is located in the town of Tawang. The water falls down from a height of about 328 ft and plunges down to meet the Tawang river flowing below.

The waterfall has an interesting tale to narrate as to how it got its name. As per the tale, a Monpa tribal girl, named Nura, helped a soldier by providing him shelter and supplying the firearms required during the Indo - China war. After which the falls was named after the girl as Nuranang.

7. Vantawng Falls

7. Vantawng Falls

The Vantawng Falls is a two-tiered waterfall which flows down from a height of 751 ft against the backdrop of steep and dense forested hill slopes. The lush greenery comprises of bamboo groves and tropical forests. The falls is located in the state of Mizoram and is one of the most ideal places to get close to Mother Nature.
