The temple is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the god of war and the lord of serpents, and is believed to have been established thousands of years ago before the Common Era.

As per local legends, it is said that when Vasuki, a serpent king, and his other companions were threatened by Garuda, they took refuge under the care of Lord Subramanya, a form of Lord Kartikeya, here. People coming to the temple need to take a bath in the waters of Kumaradhara river, which flows around the village, before entering the sanctum of the temple.
