All of us have heard of the 7 wonders of the world! How many of you have come across the 7 wonders in the state of Madhya Pradesh? Very few, is it not? Madhya Pradesh is one such state which is well known for its rich cultural heritage and history which are major reasons tourists visit. The temples of Khajuraho are well known for their architecture and in one way or the other they act as the face of the state's tourism.

There are many more treasures in the state which still remain out of the list of touristy places but are definitely considered as the gems of Madhya Pradesh. Have a look at some of these wonders.

1. Pachmarhi

At an altitude of 1100 m, the hilly retreat of Pachmarhi is fondly addressed as the Queen of Satpura, as it sits gorgeously, adorned with nature and history amidst the Satpura range. According to legends the Pandava brothers had visited Pachmarhi during their exile period and had built five caves.

The place gets its name from the five brothers, "panch" means five in Hindi and "marhi" means caves, together forming Pachmarhi. The region was discovered by Captain James Forsyth in 1857 and is one of the most popular hilly retreats in the state, which is home to a treasure of ancient caves and serene waterfalls.

2. Mahakaleshwar Temple

2. Mahakaleshwar Temple

Mahakaleshwar is one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, it also considered as one the 12 Jyotirlingas. The shrine is located on the banks of the Rudrasagar Lake in the ancient city of Ujjain. The city of Ujjain is one of the four cities which hosts the Kumbh Mela which is held once in every 12 years; the place was also the capital of Vikramaditya.

The Shivalingam here is believed to be a self-manifested one and derives currents of power from within itself when compared to other lingams, which are ritually established and then invested with the mantra shakti.

3. Bhojtal

3. Bhojtal

Bhojtal is a large lake which lies on the western side of Bhopal. According to legends, Bhojtal is believed to have been built by Paramara Raja Bhoj. The lakes was The king is also considered as the founder of the city of Bhopal, as a measure to protect the eastern frontier of his kingdom.

The lake was established after building an earthen dam across the river Kolans, an eleven gate dam was constructed in the year 1965 at Bhadbhada which controls the outflow of the river. The lake was known as Upper Lake or Bada Talab until the 2011 after which it was renamed as Bhojtal in honour of the King Raja Bhoj.

4. Sanchi Stupa

4. Sanchi Stupa

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the stupas at Sanchi were constructed under the patronage of the Emperor Ashoka in order to preserve and spread Buddhism. The place has, hence, been protected and is truly an architectural wonder which safeguards the history and art of the Mauryan period. One would come across a large number of stupas, temples and the famed Ashoka pillar which attracts visitors from near and far alike.

5. Jahaz Mahal

5. Jahaz Mahal

Built by the Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji in the 15th century as a harem to house 15,000 odd women, the Jahaz Mahal is double storeyed structure which is located between Munj Talao and Kapur Talao. The structure is surrounded by water on all its sides to create an illusion of a floating structure due to which it was named as Jahaz Mahal.

6. Dhuandhar Waterfalls

6. Dhuandhar Waterfalls

The Dhuandhar Falls is situated on the Narmada river in Bhedaghat and cascades down from a height of 30 m. The river makes its way through the renowned marble rocks which narrows down to create the waterfall. The plunge creates a mass of mist and gives out a smoke like feeling and a loud roar accompanies it which can be heard from a far of distance.

7. Maheshwar

7. Maheshwar

Maheshwar was the erstwhile capital of the Maratha queen Ahilya Devi Holkar. She developed the city with its many buildings and public works, the place is also home to her palace which now has been converted into heritage hotel by her descendants.

The place also has a large number of temples along with riverfront ghats and has been the centre of handloom weaving as early as the 5th century. Maheshwar is well known for the weaving of the multihued Maheshwari sarees and is also home to one of the finest handloom fabric traditions in the country.
