Temple Tanks are known by different names like kalyani, pushkarani, kund, theerth, sarovar, talab and so on. Temple tanks are an integral part of Indian temple architecture and they are found in many temple complexes across India. Often they are considered as sacred and hence many devotees believe in taking a holy dip in these tanks before entering the temple.
Some temple tanks are also considered as the source of rivers. Hence, people have a unique connection with these kalyanis in the temple premises. Apart from these, ancient temple tanks also depict the water storage system and design of construction followed in the ancient times. Interestingly, not only do they have incredible designs but also are built in a similar stepwell pattern found in most temples.
Today, they are sacred sites as well as tourist attractions. People make it a point to visit these Kalyanis when they visit temples with temple tanks.
