On a trip to Thiruvananthapuram, a tourist generally doesn't miss to visit Kovalam beach which is a famous tourist spot here. This time we're taking you to another beautiful beach that is quite close to Kovalam, the Shanghumukham beach!
Shanghumukham beach is located very close to Trivandrum International Airport, and is a lesser crowded place compares to Kovalam beach.

There are several factors that make this beach a wonderful travel attraction of Kerala. The beach is not fierce, thus making it a family destination to hangout on weekends, for the mesmerising sunset views, the spicy snacks that are sold at stalls at the shore, and for some great photography.
Another major factor to visit Shanghumukham beach is for the mermaid statue here. There is a huge Jalakanyaka (translated as 'mermaid') statue here that has not failed to draw attention of the visitors. The 35m long statue has the poise of a woman that craves for a touch, with her bareness and curves explicitly exposed, and the tiny tail that makes her all the more appealing.

Apart from this sensual Jalakanyaka statue sculptured by Kanayi Kunhiraman who is a Raja Ravi Varma awardee, another attraction at the beach is a restaurant that is shaped like a starfish. The Star Fish Restaurant has parking facility, and has eating kiosks, making the place a perfect place for a calm evening, away from the buzz of the city. Indian Coffee House is also not too far from here.
The white sand beach is apt for a stroll, or to just sit and marvel the beauty of a stunning sunset. However, this is not a beach for any water sports and other beach activities. The beach is also considered as 'Arattukadavu' of the presiding deity here, Sri Ananthapadmanabhan.

How to Reach Shanghumukham Beach
Shanghumukham Beach is just 8km away from Thiruvananthapuram city. Being the capital of Kerala, the city is well connected to all the major cities of Kerala and other parts of the country by road, rail and air.

Other places of interest near Shanghumukham beach include Veli Tourist Village, Kovalam beach, Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Poovar Island and Napier museum.
