India is a land blessed with beautiful mountains, hills, flora and fauna. When it comes to the mountains, one cannot imagine them without a lake in front or a river flowing down from a height. Most of us, as children, when asked to draw a scenery, would have first drawn mountains with a lake flowing either between the peaks or below it.
From children to grown-ups, lakes are indeed a very important feature for one to define the beauty of nature at its best. The lakes here have an aura within them which not only gives out a visual treat but also rejuvenates one. Take a look at some of the lakes and discover their beauty.
1. Bhimtal, Uttar Pradesh

Located in the town of Bhimtal in Uttar Pradesh, this lake is the largest lake in the Kumaon region. The lake is the main source of water to the residents of the place and is also home to a large variety of fish. The town and the lake get their names from Bhima; it is said that he has visited the lake.
2. Dal Lake, Kashmir

Undoubtedly one of the most popular and gorgeous lakes in the country, this lake is considered a gem in the crown of Kashmir, which attracts a large number of visitors from far and near alike. According to local legends, goddess Durga resides in the village of Isabar, which is located on one of the banks of the lake. The place was once the retreat of the Mughal rulers who built grand palaces around it.
3. Bhojtal, Madhya Pradesh

Previously known as Bada Talab, Bhojtal is a man-made lake which is located in Bhopal. The lake not only holds an important place in the city's history but also provides drinking water to its dwellers. The lake was built by Raja Bhoj, who happens to be the founder of Bhopal.
According to legends, it is said that the king was suffering from a skin disease and there was no cure to be found for it. One day a saint asks the king to construct a tank with 365 tributaries and to have a bath in its waters to cure himself of the disease.
4. Chilka Lake, Odisha

The Chilka Lake is located in Odisha and is the second largest lagoon in the world. The lake is also considered as the largest winter home to migratory birds in the country and plays host to over 160 species of different birds in the peak season.
5. Wular Lake, Jammu And Kashmir

Located in Bandipur district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Wular Lake is considered as one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. It is surrounded by extensive marshes and acts as a natural dwelling to many animals. The lake was originally named Ullola due to rise of high waves in the afternoons; it was renamed as Bolor by Al Biruni and over the passage of time, its name changed yet again to Wular which remains till date.
6. Pichola Lake, Rajasthan

Located in Udaipur, Lake Pichola is a man-made freshwater lake which was built in the year 1362 and derives its names from the Picholi village. The lake is home to four islands, Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas. The lake was constructed by a Banjara tribesman which impressed Maharana Udai Singh who built the city of Udaipur around it and enlarged the lake.
7. Vembanad Kayal, Kerala

Vembanad Kayal, is one of the highly valued treasures of Kerala. The lake is one of the largest in the state and is home to renowned Nehru Trophy Boat Race which takes place every year during Onam. It also holds the record of being the longest lake in the country in addition to being the largest wetland system in the country. The lake is also home to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which attracts a large number of visitors throughout the year.
