Faridabad, the second largest city of Haryana, has several tourist attractions to see and explore. One of them is the Surajkund International Crafts Mela that is unique to Haryana. Come, let's know more about this fair that takes place in February every year in Faridabad.

Surajkund International Crafts Mela is the largest crafts fair in the world, and thus it is visited by millions of visitors from across the globe. Also known as 'Surajkund Crafts Mela' or 'Surajkund designer's village', this fair takes place during the spring season in the first fortnight of February every year.

Significance Of Surajkund Crafts Mela

The fair is all about portraying the rich culture, tradition and art of the region and promoting them at a global level. It is one of the festivals that has captured its place in the International festival calendar. The first Surajkund Crafts Mela took place in the year 1987.

Some of the vibrant sights of the Crafts Mela include the display of handicrafts, textiles and cultural fabric of India. Each year, the the fair is celebrated around a theme. For the 31st Surajkund International Crafts Mela in 2017, the theme selected is "Jharkhand".

Skilled dancers and other performers showcase the traditional dance and other art forms of the place (based on the theme), and people from over 20 countries visit the Mela to witness this cultural extravaganza.

The Mela is a joint venture of the Suraj Mela Autrhority and the Haryana Tourism in collaboration with the Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs. Open air theatres at the Mela premises are filled with renowned artists, performers and artistic groups coming from various parts of the world.

Starting on February 1st every year, the festival starts with a huge splash of colours, the beats of drums, the rhythm to the music played and the people who sing and dance celebrating the spring season. The multi-cuisine food courts at the Mela premises provide the visitors with finger-licking dishes. Fun rides and other adventure activities are also organised here for the kids.
