Here is an itinerary for a road trip from Bangalore to Karwar via Shimoga. Get away from the bustle of Bangalore to jump into the coast of Karwar and get wrapped by the Western Ghats via Shimoga. The total distance is 589km which takes around 13 hours.
Planning a road trip is never easy, it takes all the effort to choose the places and the correct routes. Once the blue print is ready, next thing is the number of people, transport and accommodation. By the time all this is ready, most of us will get discouraged; it takes all the time for a good and successful trip.
A road trip gets more exciting while you take adventurous routes: ghats, village roads, forests, etc. makes you acquainted with different lifestyles and some charming scenery.
This route from Bangalore to Karwar via Shimoga is filled with ghats, farm lands, arecanut trees and the coastal line.
Give yourself 3 - 4 days to enjoy this road trip slowly and cover most of the places around. There are many places to visit in this route. We take a route that covers Shimoga, Sirsi, Gokarna to reach Karwar. Travel enthusiasts need at least 3 days to cover this route.

Kick Start from Bangalore
Distance: Bangalore - Shimoga: 287 km (via NH206)
'Early to bed and early to rise' should be your motto; hop on to your vehicles by 5 am in Bangalore and head towards Tumkur via Nelmangala.
Tumkur is around 72km from Bangalore; once you reach, have an early morning breakfast. It's always good to fill your stomach before long journeys.
There are a few restaurants like Kamath Upachar, Raghavendra Darshini, etc where you can get decent food.
The next major stop will be Kadur (140km via NH206 and Bangalore - Honavar Rd). Kadur has few eateries and restaurants. Take a break for some time and travel towards Shimoga.

Shimoga – Jog Falls - Sirsi
Shimoga is blessed with tourist places; either cover the places or head towards Sirsi.
There are two options: halt in Shimoga or halt in Sirsi to finish day 1.
If you decide to halt in Sirsi, then visit Jog falls and reach Sirsi by night.
Ashoka Grand, Surya Comforts and Green View Boutique are some of hotels to stay in Shimoga.

Sirsi – Yana - Gokarna
Distance: Sirsi - Yana: 56 km (via Kumta - Sirsi Rd)
Yana - Gokarna: 50km (via Edapally - Panvel hwy)
Begin the trip early, visit Marikamba temple and Yana.
By afternoon head towards Gokarna and try to cover some places and beaches in Gokarna : Om Beach, Mahabaleshwar Temple, Half Moon beach, etc.

Gokarna – Karwar
Distance: Gokarna - Karwar: 62km (via Edapally - Panvel Hwy)
Enjoy the day 3 by visiting the tourist places in Karwar. There are a number of places to visit in Karwar.
Karwar Port, Devbagh Beach, Warship Museum, Durga Temple, Sadashivgad Fort, Rabindranath Tagore Beach, Karwar Beach, Anshi National Park, etc.
You need at least 2 days to cover the places in Karwar. So, pick the places you want to visit and plan according to your time limit.
Rest for the day in Karwar and next morning steer your way towards Bangalore.

Karwar – Unchalli Falls – Shimoga – Bangalore
Distance: Karwar - Unchalli Falls: 123km (via Edapally - Panvel Hwy and Kumta - Sirsi Rd)
On the Day 4, either you can just drive back home or visit Unchalli Falls near Siddapur.
Visit Unchalli Falls then back to Shimoga and Bangalore by night.

Bangalore – Karwar Via Shimoga
Total Distance: 589km
The total time is almost 13 hours, with the day breaks many places can be covered.
Visiting Jog Falls and Unchalli Falls while coming back is also a good idea. It gives more time to visit Yana and Gokarna.
However, waterfalls should be visited around September - December, the water levels will be low from February till June.

Distance: Bangalore - Karwar: 636km
Another route from Bangalore to Karwar via Chitradurga, Dharwad and Dandeli. This is a long route but the roads are very good.
