Sapta Puri Tour: 7 Hindu Religious Places in India

In India there are many places and several temples. Among them, many are also mentioned in the ancient scriptures. Sapta means seven and Puri means place; the seven religious places which are sacred for Hindus in India.

According to the holy scriptures, a visit to these pilgrimage sites in India will help them attain salvation. Sapta Puri tour includes seven cities which are considered sacred from ages.

Each city has a connection with Hindu scriptures and are believed to be the places of prominent Hindu gods. It is believed that Lord Rama was born in Ayodhya, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and similar to this other cities are related with other Hindu gods.

Ayodhya

Ayodhya

Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Rama, has been in the controversy in recent years. Ayodhya is believed to have founded by Manu, the creater of Hindu ideologies.

Ayodhya is situated on the banks of river Sarayu in Uttar Pradesh. The city has been mentioned in various religious and literary texts through the history. Most famous of all the stories, is the epic of Lord Rama who ruled Ayodhya.

Today, it forms one of the prime holy places for Hindus and part of Sapta Puri tour.

Varanasi

Varanasi

Banaras or Varanasi is a famous religious place for Hindus in India. It is believed that, if a person dies in this place, then he attains moksha (salvation). Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganga is said to one of the oldest cities in India.

The city has a number of temples, it is an important part of Sapta Puri. Kashi Vishwanath temple (one of the 12 Jyothirlingas) is most famous among various other temples.

In Banaras, we can also find many mosques, together the city is one of the major pilgrimage sites in India.

Mathura

Mathura

Mathura is believed to be the birth place of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is one of the prime gods in Hindu religion. He is said to be born in an underground jail.

Mathura is also believed to be one of the oldest cities in India. It has many temples and is near to other towns like Vrindavan and Govardhan where Krishna is believed to have spent his childhood.

Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi is famous for Keshav Dev Temple, Birla Mandir and various other temples.

Haridwar

Haridwar

Haridwar is one of the sacred cities of Sapta Puri tour. It is situated on the banks of river Ganga in Uttarakhand and is the venue for Kumbha Mela (ritualistic bath in the river Ganga) every 12 years.

It is also the starting point for Char Dham Yatra (four pilgrim sites tour) to reach Mount Kailash. It is one of the famous religious places in India.

Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram is a holy city is in Tamil Nadu, it has various temples and hence a holy place for Hindus. The city also known as Kanchi, is famous for Kamakshi Amman Temple and Kanchivaram Silk in South India.

Kanchi also has a great historical past and many historical sites. Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Ekambareswarar Temple, etc. are some of the popular temples in Kanchipuram.

It is one of the pilgrimage sites of Sapta Puri tour in India.

Ujjain

Ujjain

Ujjain flourished as an urban centre during 700 BC in Madhya Pradesh (Central India). According to the holy scriptures, Ujjain came out of Samudra Manthan ( a legend of fights between Gods and Demons).

It is also called as the 'City of Temples', hence a sacred place for Hindus and included as a part of Sapta Puri tour.

Dwarka

Dwarka

Dwarka is said to be the first capital of Gujarat, it is the place where Krishna lived after killing Kamsa. Many stories relating to Lord Krishna's life is connected with Dwarka.

Today, it is known for the Dwarkadish Temple and various other temples. Hence, it is one of the Hindu 7 prominent Hindu religious places in India.
